China has more smokers than any other country, but Liu’s efforts partly explain the relative success of the capital’s ban on smoking in public spaces. “We’re very sensitive. We can tell from […]

GENEVA, Switzerland — The head of the World Health Organization, Margaret Chan, came out swinging at the opening ceremony of the 69th World Health Assembly in Geneva. The meeting of health officials from nearly 200 countries is usually a low-key, bureaucratic affair. Chan, however, opened the assembly by basically saying that the world is facing unprecedented global health challenges right now and is ill-equipped to deal with future threats. She warned against profit-oriented policies that […]

A breath test for malaria

Diagnosing malaria may soon be as easy taking a simple breath test, according to researchers. “We really envision this working just like a breathalyzer test when you get pulled over for drunk driving,” said Dr. Audrey Odom, an assistant professor of pediatrics and molecular biology at Washington University in St. Louis. The breathalyzer test, still in its developmental phase, would be comparable in cost or less expensive than current diagnostic tools such as a Malaria […]
