Astronomers stunned by star ‘nursery’ age find

PARIS, France (AFP) — Surprised astronomers have found stars of three different ages in a stellar “nursery” in the Milky Way, throwing into question the scientific consensus on how stars are formed. The European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope in Chile spotted three distinct groups of baby stars in the Orion nebula — the closest star “factory” to Earth, a team reported Thursday. “Looking at the data for the first time was one of […]

Micro-CT scan shows mason bee in unprecedented detail

GRANADA, Spain (Reuters) — Detailed microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) scans of mason bees have been released by world-renowned microtomographer Professor Javier Alba-Tercedor, of the University of Granada. Alba-Tercedor’s images helped him win ‘Best Picture Award’ at June’s Bruker micro-CT users contest in Brussels. The Professor of Zoology uses a SkyScan 1172 scanner to produce the remarkably detailed images. The SkyScan uses microtomography, a non-invasive technique used by the scientific community, especially in the field of medicine, […]

Researchers program plug-in hybrid cars to learn fuel efficiency

CALIFORNIA, United States (AFP) — Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have created a computer program for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) that learns how to save fuel, improving fuel efficiency by more than 30 percent. PHEVs can use either gasoline or electric power. Lab tests have shown the most efficient way for them to run is to switch between power from the battery and gas throughout the trip, rather than running exclusively on […]

Robot builders working on Swiss digitally fabricated house

ZURICH, Switzerland (Reuters) — Construction recently began on a three-storey house near Zurich that was designed and planned using digital techniques, and is now being built using mostly robotic systems and 3D printing technologies. The DFAB HOUSE in Dubendorf brings together a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from ETH Zurich and the Swiss National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication who have teamed up with business partners to test new building technologies under real-life […]

Mystery’ signal from space is solved. It’s not aliens

by Kerry SHERIDAN Agence France Presse MIAMI, United States (AFP) — Astronomers have finally solved the mystery of peculiar signals coming from a nearby star, a story that sparked intense public speculation this week that perhaps, finally, alien life had been found. It hasn’t. The signal, which has been formally named “Weird!” was interference from a distant satellite. Of course, astronomers said all along that extra-terrestrials were quite far at the bottom of the list […]

Space drone reveals first images

Reuters — The first images taken by camera drone robot Int-Ball have just been released. The spherical drone has been deployed by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), on board the module Kibo on the International Space Station (ISS). It arrived at ISS on June 4. Int-Ball is made from 3D-printed parts and existing drone technology. It is controlled by researchers at the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center. Taking photographs and video can take up 10 […]

Neil Armstrong moon bag sells for $1.8million in New York

NEW YORK, United States (AFP) — A bag Neil Armstrong used to collect the first ever samples of the moon — which was once nearly thrown out with the trash — sold at auction Thursday for $1.8 million, Sotheby’s said. Scientists create paper that can be erased and reprinted up to 80 times

CALIFORNIA, United States (Reuters) —  Scientists in California have created rewritable paper, printed using light instead of ink, that can be erased and reused up to 80 times. In the United States alone, about 70 million tons (63.5 million metric tons) of paper and paperboard are used each year, with more than 350 million magazines and 24 billion newspapers published, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. The chemists at the University of California, Riverside, […]

What makes a dog man’s best friend? It’s in the genes

by Kerry Sheridan Agence France-Presse MIAMI, United States (AFP) – Dogs that are extra friendly share certain genetic similarities with people who are born with a developmental disorder sometimes called the “opposite of autism,” which makes them hyper social, researchers said Wednesday. The report in the journal Science Advances pinpointed changes in two genes that are related to extreme social behavior in dogs, and also in people who are born with Williams-Beuren Syndrome. People with this […]
