3.5-magnitude quake hits Samar

(Eagle News)–A 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck Samar early Saturday, Sept. 5. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake, which hit at 3:36 a.m., had its epicenter five kilometers northeast of Santa Rita. It had a depth of 23 kilometers and was tectonic in origin. No damage to property nor aftershocks were recorded.

Customs bureau seizes P88.1 million worth of smuggled cigarettes from China

(Eagle News) –The Bureau of Customs has seized P88.1 million worth of smuggled cigarettes from China. In a statement, the bureau said the cigarettes, contained in two containers,  arrived separately on Aug. 8 and 13. The shipments–one with 851 cases of cigarettes, and the other with 911 cases–had been declared as containing umbrella and various home furniture. (Eagle News) — Former Ozamiz City councilor Ricardo “Ardot” Parojinog was found dead inside the city police’s detention facility on Friday, Sept. 4, the Philippine National Police said. According to the PNP spokesperson Lt. Gen. Bernard Banac, Parojinog, who is facing drug-related charges, was found dead at 6 a.m., on the same day he was supposed to attend a court hearing. “No violence was noted,” Banac said. (Eagle News)–A 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck off Negros Occidental early Friday, Sept. 4. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake, which struck at 3:16 a.m., had its epicenter 22 kilometers northwest of Sipalay City. It had a depth of 21 kilometers. No damage to property nor aftershocks were recorded.

PHIVOLCS: 8 volcanic quakes, weak steaming monitored at Taal in 24 hours; alert level 1 still raised

(Eagle News) — Eight volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Taal within 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said on Thursday, Sept. 3.
