PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti (Eagle News) — Civil unrest has hampered the country of Haiti, due to the ongoing protests of gas prices being raised. The government raised fuel prices from 224 to 309 htg/per gallon last Friday.
The price increase has sparked outrage by residents of Haiti. Protestors not only invaded the streets and caused disorder, but also have set buildings on fire, wreaking havoc for the weekend.
Luckson Theodore, a local resident, expressed his concern about the protests.
“I feel very bad because many stores have been burned. And, I don’t really like that”, Theodore said.
The U.S. Embassy issued a travel advisory which ceased all flights coming into and departing from Haiti.
On Sunday, July 8, the Haitian government cancelled the fuel increase due to many deaths linked to the protests. Flights have now resumed. (with photo contributions by Wendy Pierre, Eagle News Service)
