CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) — Drama broke out at Venezuela’s National Assembly on Tuesday (June 27) where two dozen lawmakers said they were being besieged by pro-government gangs.
Video that emerged on social media showed National Guard troops outside the National Assembly as opposition legislators shouted.
The National Assembly chaos came as a Venezuelan police helicopter attacked the Supreme Court, ratcheting up a political crisis in what President Nicolas Maduro condemned as a “terrorist” attack.
There was speculation on social media among opposition supporters that the helicopter attack could have been staged to justify repression or cover up the drama at the National Assembly.
