(Eagle News) – China will  not adopt a “tit-for-tat” approach should the Philippines decide to deport illegal Chinese workers, the Chinese embassy said on Thursday, Feb. 28.

According to the Chinese embassy, in the first place, China “adheres to the principle of non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs.”

Secondly, it said China “respects the laws and regulations of the Philippines, and therefore “holds that Chinese nationals should not stay or work illegally in foreign countries including the Philippines.”

“Third, the Chinese government has always requested Chinese nationals in the Philippines to observe the Philippine laws and regulations,” the embassy said, noting that it has been issuing “consular notices in this regard.”

“China hopes that the Philippine law enforcement agencies would continue to deal with relevant issues in accordance with the laws and regulations in a professional manner,” it added.

Earlier, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the Chinese ambassador had told him that “if this government will just deport Chinese not in accordance with law, then we will also do the same. ”

“That’s tit for tat,” he had said.
