(Eagle News) – Residents of Baguio City felt an extremely cold temperature of 8.0 degrees Celsius early Tuesday morning, February 14, becoming the coldest recorded temperature so far this year.
This was recorded at 5 a.m. today, beating the previous record of 9.2 degrees Celsius set on Sunday, February 12.
Both surpassed the 2016 record low of 10.8 degrees Celsius.
The country’s weather bureau said that this cold weather was caused by the northeast monsoon or “hanging amihan” which is pushed from mainland Asia by a high pressure cell.
On Sunday, PAGASA also recorded low temperature readings in other parts of Benguet province, such as in Mount Santo Tomas at 7.4 degree Celsius, and in Atok town at 6 degrees Celsius.
“Frosting” was also reported in these areas.
So far, the lowest temperature recorded in Baguio City, dubbed as the country’s Summer Capital was on January 19, 1961, when a very cold 6.3 degrees Celsius was recorded.
