COMELEC proclaims 12 winning senatorial candidates

(Eagle News) — The Commission on Elections has already proclaimed the 12 winning senatorial candidates in the May 2016 elections

This was based on the 166 certificates of canvass which were tabulated by the COMELEC that had served as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC)

Five are newcomers in the Senate.  They are former TESDA director general Joel Villanueva, boxing champion and former Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao, former Party-List Rep. Risa Hontiveros, and former Valenzuela Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian, and former Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.

Four of the proclaimed candidates had previously served in the Senate.  They are Senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, Richard Gordon,  Miguel Zubiri and Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan.

The other three are incumbent senators:  Franklin Drilon, Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, and Ralph Recto.

In the final canvassing of votes of the NBOC, re-electionist senator Drilon led the race, followed by Villanueva, Sotto, Lacson, Gordon, Zubiri, Pacquiao, Pangilinan, Hontiveros, Gatchalian, Recto And De Lima.

The proclamation of the 12 senators was done despite the petition filed by senatorial candidate former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) head Francis Tolentino who was at the 13^th spot.

Tolentino had asked for the postponement of the proclamation of the senatorial candidates who landed on the 10^th up to the 12^th spot.

But COMELEC chair Andres Bautista said that the remaining uncounted votes of more than 1,000 would have no effect in the final results, claiming that De Lima had more than a million lead in counted votes than Tolentino.

The COMELEC’s proclamation of the 12 winning senators digressed from the previous act of proclamation by batches of winning senators by the poll body.
