Comelec: Extension of barangay, SK voters’ registration ‘unlikely’

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it was “unlikely” there would be an extension of the ongoing voters’ registration for the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.

According to Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez, the commission sees no valid reason at this time to extend the registration.

“Although there has yet to be a formal request for an extension of the voter registration, current prevailing events make it unlikely,” he said.

He also noted that the period is already the “second round” of registration. The first was conducted from July 15 to 30 last year.

According to the law, the registration should be conducted 120 days before a regular election and 90 days before a special election.

The barangay and SK elections were postponed last year so candidates backed by drug lords would not the chance of being voted into office.
