Corrupt customs officials get bribe money of more than Php 270 million a day — P98.5 billion a year, says Lacson

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Bribery at the Bureau of Customs (BOC) continues as revealed by Senator Panfilo Lacson.

The senator pointed out that this is the reason why Php 6.4 billion worth of illegal drugs was able to enter the country.

Lacson also revealed the so-called “3 o’clock habit” which is the giving of bribes to Customs officials every Friday.

Lacson said that each bribe is worth Php 27, 000 to Php 30, 000 per container van based on the information he got from brokers he had spoken with.

The computation on the payoffs amounted to Php 270 million per day.  Customs commissioner Nicanor Faeldon had said that about 10,000 containers go through the BOC every day.

“If you multiply this (P270 million) by 365 days, that is P98.5 billion a year,” Lacson said.
