JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Eagle News) – Hundreds of Jacksonville residents in Duval County lined up at Regency Square Mall on Wednesday to receive food assistance from Florida’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP).
“Food for Florida,” a program sponsored by D-SNAP offers emergency food benefits to disaster survivors. Assistance eligibility is based on a resident’s monthly income and the number of members in a household. Residents need to pre-register online prior to receiving a food assistance card. Once received, residents have 90 days to avail of the benefits.
Residents in Duval County who were severely impacted by Hurricane Irma not only lost power for several days, but also had to discard a majority of the food they had. Depending on eligibility, residents can potentially receive up to $1500 in food assistance.
Nicole Tolliver, a 30-year resident of Jacksonville said, “I feel with all that we as Floridians have had to deal with, the food assistance will help by it being one less thing people right now need to worry about.”
The “Food for Florida” program continued in Duval County until its cutoff date: October 17.
