Davao Mayor Duterte: #Babaeako campaign vs President Duterte “doomed”

(Eagle News) — Davao Mayor Sara Duterte on Wednesday, June 27, said the #Babaeako social media campaign against President Rodrigo Duterte was bound to fail.

In an Instagram post, the Davao mayor said that in the first place, “what (the President) doesn’t like lies not in the gender, but in the character.”

“He has no respect for weakness. And many women and some men are known to be damsels in distress, that #babaeako included,” she said.

In their family, she said she was even considered the “favorite child.”

“This is the first time I will say it out loud and I hate to admit it because I love my two brothers too much but yes…so that #babaeako campaign is doomed,” she said.

The campaign was launched in May following what critics said was Duterte’s misogynistic behavior.

The Palace denied the allegations against the chief executive, however, noting that before he even became President, he pushed for the Magna Carta for Women and implemented other programs for women in Davao.

The Palace also noted Duterte’s appointment of women in sensitive government posts: Judy Taguiwalo as social welfare secretary, Gina Lopez as environment secretary, Wanda Teo as tourism secretary, among others.

Taguiwalo and Lopez were rejected by the powerful Commission on Appointments, while Teo resigned over a tourism advertisement placement controversy.

Some of those posts, however, were taken over also by women appointed by the President.

Teo, for instance, was replaced by Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.
