With the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections just around the corner, the Philippine National Police on Thursday, May 10, gave the assurance it was “on top of the situation.”
This was even if it admitted that more than 20 have been killed in what could be election-related incidents recorded across the country since less than a month ago.
According to the PNP, apart from the 24 fatalities, four have been injured from April 14 to May 9.
Of the 24 killed, 13 were elected government officials, three were candidates and six were civilians, among others.
Of the 76 suspects, only three have so far been arrested.
So far, 7,915 barangays are on the list of election hotspots.
But according to the PNP, this was not a concern as the figure represents only 10 percent of the total number of barangays in the country.
“Hindi pa alarming..We are on top of the situation. The PNP and the (Armed Forces of the Philippines) are ready to secure elections,” Chief Supt. John Bulalacao, PNP spokesperson, said in an ambush interview.
