(Eagle News)–The Department of Environment and Natural Resources will lead a task force to expedite rehabilitation and recovery efforts in areas hit by the series of storms in recent weeks.
The Department of Public Works and Highways, on the other hand, shall serve as co-chair, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said.
He said the small change in who shall lead the Build Back Better Task Force was after the government decided to consider a “science-based approach” in rehabilitation and recovery efforts.
Earlier, Roque announced Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea would take the helm of the task force.
“The leadership role was given to DENR and DPWH in recognition of their respective mandates and core competence,” Roque said.
He said the Office of the President “retains its oversight,” which means the task force shall be regularly reporting to the President, through Medialdea.
“A working draft on the proposed Build Back Better Task Force Executive Order has been submitted and is being considered by the President,” Roque said.
President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to place Luzon under a state of calamity.
This would allow affected local government units to use the Quick Response Fund for rehabilitation efforts.
A price freeze and no-interest loans shall also be implemented.
By default, the state of calamity remains in effect until lifted by the President.
