(Eagle News) — Five students were killed and six were injured after the public utility van they were on collided with a truck in Negros Oriental on Friday, March 1.
In a statement, the Department of Education said the casualties were students from the Basay National High School and their coach who were on their way home from a competition in Cebu.
Of those who were killed, one was a Grade 7 student, and four were Grade 11 students.
Those injured–their coach and five other Grade 11 students—are undergoing treatment in the hospital.
The DepEd said personnel from its field offices were in the hospital to “closely monitor the condition of those injured and check any further assistance that can be extended.”
The DepEd said it was also providing the victims of the families and their families with assistance through its Region VII Office and Bayawan’s Schools Division Office.
“The Department extends its sincerest condolences to the bereaved families, and expresses its wholehearted commitment to ensuring that they and the survivors receive adequate support as they go through this difficult time,” the DepEd said.
