DFA monitoring situation in Indonesia following eruption of Mt. Gamalama

(Eagle News)–The Department of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation in North Sulawesi in Indonesia following the eruption of Mt. Gamalama there.

Consul General Oscar Orcine said the three Filipinos in Ternate near the area are so far safe.

The three, the DFA said, are inmates serving prison terms.

Two were convicted a year and a half ago for illegal fishing and are scheduled to be released in May.

The other, on the other hand, has been in jail since 2014 for illegal transport of cyanide and is awaiting to be repatriated.

In its report to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, the Philippine Consulate General in Manado said authorities have declared Alert Level II in the immediate vicinity of the volcano.

Citizens have also been told to stay outside a two-kilometer danger zone around the crater.

The eruption on Thursday of the volcano, located 325 kilometers from Manado, came a day after Mount Supotan in North Sulawesi erupted.
