DILG: LGUs must use bigger IRA well, ensure it contributes to nat’l development

(Eagle News)—The Department of the Interior and Local Government urged local government units to use the additional funds coming from their bigger share of government revenue taxes well and to monitor their use closely to “ensure that they contribute to national development goals and objectives.”

Interior spokesperson Jonathan Malaya issued the statement as he welcomed the Supreme Court decision that ruled the local government units’ internal revenue allotments included  not just taxes collected by the Bureau of Internal Revenue but  all national taxes.

“We are pleased with the decision of the (SC) since it gives life to the Constitutional mandate that LGUs must be given a just share in national revenues,” Malaya said.

He said with the decision, the “delivery of basic services will improve impacting directly on the lives of our countrymen.”

He added this would also allow LGUs “to improve its services particularly on anti-poverty and peace and order.”
