DND declares unilateral holiday ceasefire with Communist rebels

(Eagle News) — The Department of National Defense declared on Thursday  a unilateral ceasefire with communist rebels.

The ceasefire will take effect from 6 p.m. of December 23, to 6 p.m. of December 26; and from 6 p.m. of December 30 to 6 p.m. of January 2, 2018.

“We urge those who are waging war against our sovereign government and inflicting harm on the Filipino people to spend this period in reflection and seriously reconsider returning to the fold of law,” the DND said.

The declaration comes after President Rodrigo Duterte announced a suspension of military operations against the Communist rebels during the holidays.

Duterte said  that the suspension would be from December 24 to January 2, 2018.

Duterte had said the suspension was not for the Communists, but for the soldiers who engage in the military operations.
