It is said that the hole of the doughnut was claimed to have invented by Captain Hanson Gregory in 1847 at the age of 16 while aboard a lime trading ship using the ship’s tin pepper box, and later taught the technique to his mother. There is even a plaque in Rockport, Maine near Clam Cove that states “In commemoration. This is the birthplace of Captain Hanson Gregory, who first invented the hole in the doughnut in 1847. Erected by his friends, Nov. 2, 1947.”
Aside from the fact that doughnuts have holes in it, we should also know where the piece of the doughnut goes after being removed from the center. The answer, and many people have guessed right, is that said pieces were used as small, usually spherical-shaped doughnuts, what we know as the popular, bite-size miniature doughnuts. Actually, these are called doughnut holes. Said mini-doughnuts come from the center portion removed from the ring doughnuts with the use of the machine called doughnut cutter.
Of course if we are accustomed to different typical flavors of doughnuts, we might as well get to know some sort of weird flavors – they call it outrageous, but for me it’s just weird, and in fact amazing. We’ve listed 5 weirdest flavour donuts could ever have and the results are truly… yep, weird, yet amazing.
First is the half doughnut, half grilled cheese flavor that will surely give you a hundred percent heart attack if you’re going to taste this mouth-watering treat! I can imagine how the grilled cheese will complement the taste of the plain doughnut, yummy!
The second one would be the “Monte Cristo” Doughnut which has this kind of literally combined sweet and savoury flavour of ham, melted cheese and strawberry jam sandwiched between two halves of a glazed doughnut [sounds like heaven!]
The third one is the wasabi cheese doughnuts from Pyscho Donuts. Those who tasted wasabi flavor might imagine how weird or odd the taste is but for some people it surely tastes differently delicious, especially to Japanese. Wasabi, is a Japanese plant with a thick green root that tastes like strong horseradish and is used in cooking, especially in powder or paste form as an accompaniment to raw fish. Imagine how it would taste if you ate it together with doughnut. But of course, just like what we are saying, not all people find wasabi odd, some find it delightful!
For the fourth flavour, we listed the “Worm Hole” Doughnut: A jalapeno tequila-spiked cake with salted lime icing, key-lime drizzle and — you guessed it — a spiced worm on top. Also hailing from Psycho Donut.
And fifth but not the least on the list of the weirdest doughnut flavors would be the cricket. Also called the “chirp derp” donut, it is a dark-chocolate cake with chocolate icing, bacon bits and, you’ve guessed it, crickets!
Another interesting stuff about doughnut is that it is originally called as “olykoeks” a dutch name that means oily cakes and also one funny story about doughnut is that it is said to be made when a cow kicked over a pot of oil into a mixture of pasty.
If one will ask if there is a doughnut day, yes there is and the reason it started in 1938 is to honor those in the Salvation Army who served the tasty treats to soldiers in World War 1. It also celebrates the popularity of this tasty treat. As a matter of fact, more than 10 million doughnuts are baked in the United States every year.
To sum up everything, doughnuts are not just your ordinary pastry, unlike any other food we know, doughnuts are very interesting and not just only rich in flavour and kinds but also rich in history and story.
