Dogs – they are really your best friends

QUEZON City, Philippines (September 19) – “A dog does not care if you’re rich or poor. All he can offer is his love and loyalty for his master.”

These are the touching words that will leave a mark in your heart after watching the movie “Marley & Me” by David Frankel.

The movie is not just about a dog and his master. It’s a story of a lifetime companionship of a man and his best friend. It is rare to find someone who would accept you wholeheartedly, which makes the movie more compelling because of the story that lies within it. Dog lovers would pretty much enjoy the movie.

Dogs are known to be loyal pets. Did you know that dogs have feelings too? According to the Reader’s Digest, dogs get jealous when it comes to their master.

Like human beings, dogs also express their feelings and interact though actions. They are more likely to be aloof and stubborn when they are jealous or sad. They wag their tails when they want to play or when they are happy. They bark when they want to eat or they are hungry. In a way, dogs have human traits too.

Throughout history, dogs have served multiple purposes, not just as our lovable companions.  Mastiffs donned light armor and were sent after mounted knights. While in Russia, dogs are trained to run suicide mission during the World War II.

The loyalty of dogs knows no bounds.  A German Shepherd led her blind companion the entire 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail.

Unfortunately, some cultures, like here in Asia, dogs are usually used as food.

According to animal welfare groups, butchering of dogs for food is very rampant in the Philippines. What makes it more unsettling is that the act is usually done by the dog owners themselves.  In this aspect, dogs act better compared to humans. They gave us loyalty and friendship. We eat them.

Every year, on August 26, National Dogs’ Day is celebrated in the United States of America. This is a special day were dog owners and dog lovers show their best friends much-needed love and appreciation. But dogs deserved more than a day. Make everyday National Dogs’ Day for your precious companion.
