SCHIPHOL AIRPORT, AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) – Access to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport returned to normal in the early hours of Wednesday (April 13) after temporarily closure of part of its shopping area due to a suspicious situation, local media reported.
Part of Schiphol Plaza – the commercial area located at the entrance of the airport and accessible to both passengers and visitors – was evacuated on Tuesday (April 12) evening around 9.40 P.M. (0740GMT) and a person was arrested by police near its entrance.
Heavily-armed and masked police officers were seen guarding a street near Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel, which is close to the airport’s entrance.
Local media said photos from the scene showed a bomb squad robot being used to inspect a bag that was left on the street.
Dutch police later confirmed that no dangerous substances had been found in the bag of the arrested suspect and declared the investigation over.
Some evacuated areas were re-opened just before 1 A.M., said local media.
Airport traffic was not affected by the incident, said the police.
