(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday, June 12, said he was “working on” increasing the salary of teachers but noted there were “millions” of them.
In a speech, Duterte also defended his decision to increase the salaries of uniformed personnel first, saying a country should have a strong armed forces.
“If you want a strong country, you need to have a strong army. Nothing will happen if you have a weak armed forces. They are weak and you cannot enforce the law,” he said.
Teachers have been asking for the increase, but the government said they would have to study this first.
According to Education Secretary Leonor Briones, the government was looking to increase the salaries of over 800,000 teachers in the country.
