(Eagle News) — Aside from the drug problem and media corruption, President-elect Rodrigo Duterte also criticized large mining companies that, according to him, destroy the country’s natural resources.

In his thanksgiving party last Saturday, Duterte slammed big mining companies, particularly in Surigao del Norte, and threatened to have them shutdown if they do not take care of the environment. He also said that the first beneficiaries of the province’s natural resources should be the Moros.

Along with this, the incoming president expressed his desire to see a cooperative of Filipino miners, which he would assign to look into sustainable mining.

Duterte plans to appoint a retired military officer as Department of Environment and Natural Resources secretary.
