Duterte to wait for Congress’ report on inquiries before deciding on Customs chief Faeldon’s fate

(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said he would wait for the results of Congress’ investigation into the Bureau of Customs’ failure to stop a P6.4-billion drug shipment into the country before deciding on Customs chief Nicanor Faeldon’s fate.

“Let the investigation (continue)..I want the (final) report. I will review it and I will be fair,” he said in a press conference after his speech during the 113th founding anniversary celebration of the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

He said if there is corruption, “wala na tayong magawa.”

“(But) if it’s just a question of a mathematical computation or an equation used, there is really nothing to it,” he said.

“I believe in (Faeldon’s) integrity,” he added.

The committees on ways and means and on dangerous drugs of the House of Representatives, and the blue ribbon committee of the Senate are investigating how a P6.4-billion drug shipment managed to enter the country via a Customs express lane.

Faeldon is facing mounting calls to resign after he refused to conduct a “control-delivery” of all six crates containing the illegal substance despite repeated prodding by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, which congressmen said should have been in charge of the case in the first place because of its drug-related nature.

Several congressmen said Faeldon bungled what could have been strong cases against the two Taiwanese believed behind the shipment because of his act.
