Eagle News Service’s Hawaii correspondent Alfred Acenas reports near the Daniel K. Inouye airport, also known as the Honolulu International airport, on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018 on the preparations being done in Hawaii before the expected arrival of Hurricane Lane later on nightfall.
Acenas reports on the public address made by Honolulu mayor Kirk Caldwell urging residents to step up preparedness measures before the monster hurricane’s arrival.
“Everyone on O‘ahu and throughout the state should take Hurricane Lane seriously as the storm is projected to bring prolonged heavy rain, the possibility of dangerous flooding, high surf and damaging winds,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “Just as the city is preparing to weather the storm, residents and visitors should be doing the same right now, and not procrastinate. Please get your 14-day hurricane kits ready and speak to your family and neighbors to make sure everyone knows what to do,” Mayor Caldwell said.
Hawaii Governor David Ige, in a tweet, said that: “#HurricaneLane remains a Category 4 storm with winds near 145 mph; Hawaii Island seeing impacts from storm’s outer bands. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for #Oahu, #Maui County and #Hawaii County. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for #Kauai County. #HIGov #HInews #Lane”
Hours before the hurricane is expected to make landfall there is still a deceiving calm in the area. But this is not expected to last.
