Eiffel Tower goes black in memory of St Petersburg victims

PARIS, France (Reuters) — Paris’s Eiffel Tower went black an hour earlier than usual in memory of the 14 victims of the St Petersburg attack on Tuesday (April 4).

The lights went out at the monument just before midnight (2200GMT), echoing a similar tribute to the victims of the London stabbings last month.

Previously the Eiffel Tower had been lit up in the colors of the French, German, Belgian and rainbow flags as a mark of respect after attacks.

The decision by the city of Berlin not to illuminate its most famous landmark, the Brandenburg Gate, in the colors of the Russian flag in a similar gesture has provoked anger.
