The “Elderly Filipino Week” is observed every first week of October pursuant to Proclamation No. 470 to promote the well being of the elderly Filipinos.
According to latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, there are more than 3.4 million Filipinos aged 60 years and above (2010 census).
As part of this year’s celebration, the senior citizens were given free MRT and LRT rides from October 1 to 7.
Aside from this, 17 centenarians were also given framed greeting signed by President Rodrigo Duterte, as part of the recognition mandated by the 2016 Centenarians Law, during the opening ceremonies of the annual Elderly Filipino Week on October 1. They were also given P100,000 each as a gift.
