Embassy official says Filipinos affected by massive fire in West London apartment block

(Eagle News) — Many Filipinos were living in the apartment block in West London that was engulfed by a massive fire early Wednesday, killing at least six people.

Consul General Senen Mangalile, who is based in the Philippine embassy in London, England, said they did not have an exact figure of Filipinos living in the 27-storey Grenfell Tower in the working-class north Kensington area, but that some of them who were in the evacuation centers for the fire victims confirmed this.

He said over 3000 to 4000 Filipinos were living in the Kensington area.

“Kinukuha natin ang kumpirmasyon kung sila ay ligtas o dinala sa mga ospital,” he said.

He said there was no information yet if Filipinos were left inside the building, which described as “a socialized housing with no sprinkler system” in a separate television interview.

He said that they were still waiting for the “official confirmation” of those affected by the fire from British authorities.

“Maglalabas kami ng opisyal na pahayag sa aming social media at website,” he said.
