LAOAG CITY, April 12 (PIA) – It takes a leader’s political will to implement proper waste management to protect the environment, Juan delos Reyes, provincial environment and natural resources officer, said.
De los Reyes added the local government units have control of the implementation of better solid waste management.
“We already have complete reports regarding the solid waste problems in Ilocos Norte, but what we need now is the political will to implement the Republic Act 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act),” he said.
During the 4th Regional Philippine Area Management Board (PAMB) convention at the Palacio de Laoag Hotel in Ilocos Norte on April 6-7, de los Reyes said that the environment bureau is monitoring the status of dump sites and waste disposal practices of public hospitals and businesses.
“The National Waste Management Commission had sent letters and (is ready) to file cases with the ombudsman or any court against municipalities which are not compliant with the R.A. 9003,” he said.
Based on records, majority of cities and municipalities in Ilocos Norte are still using open dump site and lack the sanitary landfill which is required under the R.A. 9003.
The law provides for institutional mechanisms and incentives, declares certain acts prohibited and imposes penalties for violation of its provisions. (MCA/Elyzza Carmelle B. Pasion, PIA1-Ilocos Norte, OJT)
