(Eagle News) — Senator Francis Escudero on Thursday said members of the Aegis Juris fraternity who were attempting to cover up the death of hazing victim Horacio Castillo III had tarnished the reputation of the law profession.
Speaking at a media briefing, Escudero said those who figured in the online exchange revealed by the Manila Police District in Wednesday’s hearing for this purpose “committed moral turpitude,” after all.
“Maliwanag base sa chat nila na nag intensyon ay ikubli ang krimen at itago yung mga liable talaga rito,” the senator said.
He said all of these acts could be the basis for a student not to be allowed to take the bar.
“…At ground din ‘yan ng disbarment ng abogado,” he added.
According to MPD head Chief Supt. Joel Coronel, of the 30 who figured in the online exchange, 19 also met at Novotel in Cubao, Quezon City, after Castillo died to discuss the steps to be taken by the fraternity.
Castillo, a University of Sto. Tomas law freshman student, died of a heart attack due to massive trauma resulting from injuries believed sustained during hazing rites performed by the fraternity.
