QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) — Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Tuesday, March 20 said that the proposed bill allowing divorce will go through a lengthy debate in the Senate.
On Monday, the measure which allows a married couple to divorce passed on third reading with a vote of 134-57 with 2 abstentions in the House of Representatives.
Escudero’s statement was made after President Rodrigo Duterte through Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that he does not support the proposal to dissolve marriage.
The President believes that children of the separated spouses will suffer if the divorce bill pushes through.
Although, many senators expressed their opposition to the proposed bill, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said the Senate will study the bill as it is a new concept.
“Dissolution of marriage is a new concept; hence, give us time to study it,” Pimentel said when sought for comment.
