(Eagle News) — Ambassador Renato Villa returned to the Philippines on Wednesday, May 2.
This was after he was expelled by the Kuwaiti government in protest of the Philippine embassy’s rescue of Overseas Filipino Workers there.
Overseas Workers Welfare Administration deputy administrator Arnel Ignacio said Kuwait deems the move illegal since Kuwaiti authorities were not informed about the same.
According to Villa, he looked forward to the two countries working together “in securing and providing our distinct core national interests, the well-being of overseas Filipinos.”
Kuwait also recalled its Manila representative following the rescue.
This was even after President Rodrigo Duterte met with the Kuwaiti ambassador, who, according to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, gave the assurance OFWs in the Middle Eastern country would be protected.
The Philippines during the meeting, Cayetano said, also said it would respect Kuwait.
