Families of martial law victims seek reversal of SC ruling on Marcos burial

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — A group composed of families of martial law victims filed a motion for reconsideration seeking to reverse the Supreme Court’s November 8 ruling allowing the burial of the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The group, Families of Victims of Involuntary Disappearance (FIND), insisted that they still have until Monday, November 28 to appeal the decision of the Supreme Court.

In their motion, filed through their counsel, Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, a vocal anti-Marcos advocate, they said the burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani was a “veritable honor” accorded to a “disgraced” leader who was deposed through a people’s revolt in February 1986.

They claimed that Marcos’ burial at the LNMB would not lead to closure, even as they insisted that the former President Marcos does not deserve the honor of being interred at the LNMB even if he was a former President and soldier.

They also claimed that the Marcos family had already waived his burial at the said cemetery 24 years ago.
Other reasons cited were the following:

  • that AFP Regulations G 161-375 dated September 11, 2002 issued by the Department of National Defense is not effective and enforceable due to absence of registration with the Office of the National Administrative Registrar (ONAR) of the University of the Philippine Law Center as required by the Administrative Code of 1987
  • that there are laws and SC decisions which militate against and prohibit the Marcos burial at the LNMB
  • that the EDSA People Power Revolution message is clear and resounding: Marcos was ousted for being a despot, plunderer and violator of human rights

They also claimed that the “sins against the nation” of the late President allegedly far outweigh any achievements he had done for the country.
