It was an emotional day for family and friends of those who disappeared on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, with a ceremony marking the first anniversary bringing together Malaysian, Chinese and other nationalities, as well as Malaysia Airlines staff.
People of different races, religions and nationalities were united by the disappearance of their friends and relatives one year ago aboard flight MH370, and by the worry that they might never know what happened to them.
Voice370, the mutual support group for the families, organized the remembrance ceremony for family, friends and guests, emphasizing that it was not a memorial.
“I feel sad. I feel sorry for every one of us. And of course I feel the love among us, we share the loss,” said Intan Maizura Othaman, wife of an MH370 crew member.
Grace Subathirai Nathan, whose mother was on board the flight, organized the event.
“This is why I am here speaking to you today. It is why I’m here going through this heart wrenching episode, talking about my feelings. It’s not easy. But I’m doing it because I need to know that I’ve done everything I can for my mother, even if she’s not here,” said Nathan.
The anniversary commemorations began Friday night with a candlelight vigil.
“I organized this program tonight in order that Malaysians do not forget MH370. We owe it to the families of the crews and passenger not to forget,” said Peter Chong, a friend of the MH370 pilot.
What happened to the flight after it vanished from radar screens remains unknown. Even after 365 days of extensivesearch efforts, no debris from the plane has been found, no flotsam spotted at sea, nothing at all to indicate where the modern passenger jet might have pitched into the ocean.
