Filipino family and ambulance go to prison island ahead of execution

APRIL 28 (Reuters) — Family of Mary Jane Veloso, drug trafficker facing death penalty in Indonesia, arrived at Wijaya Pura Port on Tuesday (April 28), as they prepared to bid farewell with their loved one.

The family was on the way to the prison island of Nusakambangan as executions of nine drug convicts, mostly foreigners, entered its final countdown.

Ambulances with coffins inside arrived at the Nusakambangan prison island in central Java, where the nine are expected to be executed as early as Tuesday night.

In a regional meeting in Malaysia, Philippines President Benigno Aquino asked Indonesian President Joko Widodo to not execute Veloso, saying that she was duped into carrying drugs into Indonesia.

Widodo said he was sympathetic and would consider the plea, but later Indonesia’s Attorney General said there would be no clemency for Veloso.

Rebuffing last-minute appeals from Australia and the Philippines to spare their nationals, Indonesian Attorney General H.M. Prasetyo told Reuters late on Monday (April 27) that the nine had been given notice and had been placed in isolation cells.

Security at the port was heightened and religious counselors, doctors and the firing squad were alerted to start final preparations for the execution of the four Nigerians, two Australians, an Indonesian, a Brazilian and a Filipina. (Indonesia)
