Fire rages at arms warehouse in eastern Ukraine

KHARKIV, Ukraine (Reuters) — A massive fire broke out on Thursday (March 23) at an arms warehouse in the east Ukrainian province of Kharkiv.

Several hours after the fire started, flames were still rising from the territory around the arsenal. Explosions could also be heard.

Ukrainian prosecutor Anatoly Matios was quoted as saying the warehouse area covers 368 hectares and there were 138 tons of arms stored on it.

According to local media, Ukrainian emergency services were evacuating over 15,000 residents from villages nearby as a safety precaution.
