Firefighters battle wildfire in Arizona

Crews battling a wildfire in north Arizona stopped the march of the flames toward residential areas but the possibility of evacuation remains.

A wildfire  continued to burn on along a scenic corridor in northern Arizona on Friday (May 23), as fire crews battled to contain the wind-whipped blaze.

Thousands of residents were still on alert for possible evacuations from the the so-called Slide Fire, threatening the tourist-popular area near Sedona and Flagstaff.

Erratic winds were to blame for the fire’s longevity, according to local officials who added weather conditions should improve during the next several days, with reduced winds, higher humidity and a chance of precipitation.

The fire, believed to have been caused by humans, broke out north of Slide Rock State Park on Tuesday (May 20), a popular recreation area.

No homes have been lost and there have been no injuries, officials said.

The American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at a middle school in Flagstaff for those already forced to flee their homes. (Reuters)
