(Eagle News) — Former Defense Secretary Fortunato Abat died on Wednesday at the age of 92.
His granddaughter, Patricia, confirmed his death in a Facebook post.
“I love you SO much, Lolo. Rest well. It was an honor and a privilege to see you fight your biggest battle,” Patricia said.
Abat is survived by his wife, Corazon, and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His wake will be held in Loyola Commonwealth.
His remains will be interred at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Abat was ambassador to China prior to becoming defense undersecretary under then-President Cory Aquino’s administration.
He was also commanding general of the Army for five years, reportedly the longest in the Philippine military’s history.
He was appointed as defense chief under then-President Fidel Ramos’ term.
