(Eagle News) — Former President Benigno Aquino III on Friday, Sept. 21, called out former Senator Bongbong Marcos and former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile for their remarks no one was killed or arrested during former President Ferdinand Marcos’ time.
In a video posted in the younger Marcos’ page, Enrile, who was former President Marcos’ defense secretary, said no massacre took place when martial law was in place during that time.
He said this was unlike what happened during “the supposed democratic government of Cory Aquino” in Mendiola.
He was referring to the now-infamous Mendiola massacre, in which at least 12 protesters, some of them farmers, calling for comprehensive land reforms were shot and killed by government security forces who were attempting to disperse them.
In the video, Enrile also belied some claims former President Marcos declared martial law to keep himself in power, saying one of the reasons he did this was because of the alliance formed between the Liberal Party and the Communist Party of the Philippines.
