Former Senate President Maceda dies, 81

Former Senate President Ernesto Maceda

(EAGLE NEWS)–Former Senate President Ernesto Maceda passed away at 8:58 p.m. Monday (June 20) because of multiple organ failure, his family said.  He was 81.

Maceda served as a senator from 1971 to 1972 and again from 1987 to 1998. He also served as a Senator from 1971 to 1972 and again from 1987 to 1998. He served as Senate President from 1996 to 1998.

The former senator, who also served as Philippine Ambassador to the United States, suffered complications from a heart ailment. He has gone through several bypass operations in the past.

Atty. Ernesto Maceda Jr. said his father underwent surgery and was still conscious after the procedure on Monday morning. However, his condition went worse since then.  He was in critical condition and was on life-support due to post-surgery complication before he succumbed to multiple organ failure Monday night

Maceda was rushed to the hospital last Friday after complaining of chest pains.

Earlier Maceda family spokesperson Jimmy Policarpio said that Maceda underwent gall bladder surgery two days ago.
