Fantasy drama “Game of Thrones” won the Emmy award for best TV Drama on Sunday (September 20), toppling old favorite “Mad Men” for the win. It was the first best drama series Emmy for “Thrones” in its five years on the air. The show also won awards for writing, directing and for supporting actor Peter Dinklage.
“Mad Men,” a long-time Emmy favorite, failed to get a farewell hug after closing its final season earlier this year, but did see a win for Jon Hamm, who finally snared a win for his lead role as Don Draper in the AMC series.
“There has been a terrible mistake, clearly, so thank you for that,” said Hamm.
Viola Davis became the first African-American to win a drama lead actress Emmy for her role as a tough criminal defense lawyer in “How to Get Away With Murder.”
“The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity,” Davis said in an emotional acceptance speech. “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”
Uzo Aduba took home the supporting female trophy for her role in “Orange Is the New Black.” (Reuters)
