ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia (Reuters) — European and Asian leaders continued to arrive in Ulaanbaatar on Thursday (July 14) ahead of the 11th ASEM summit hosted by Mongolia.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and South Korean President Park Geun-hye are both attending the two-day summit, which runs from July 15-16 and focuses on politics, the economy and culture.

Ahead of the meeting, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi briefed EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on plans to set up a bilateral mechanism to deal with Chinese steel overcapacity concerns, which came up in discussions between Chinese and EU leaders during meetings in Beijing earlier in the week.

Heads of state and representatives from 28 EU member states, and 21 Asian countries will be attending the ASEM summit, including Chinese Premier Li Keqiang .

European Council President, Donald Tusk, and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will also be present.

Final preparations for the summit were taking place across the city on Wednesday (July 13) and Thursday with large numbers of police and security officials deployed on the streets.
