(Eagle News) — Gilas Pilipinas stormed to yet another victory in the Asia Cup on Sunday, beating Qatar who never said die but fell short nonetheless.
The Philippine national team–which had secured a slot in the quarterfinals even before Sunday’s match— swept Group B with its six-point win against the Qataris, who did not disappoint with their outside shooting, especially in the later part of the game.
The threes were what essentially put the Qataris on track in the fourth quarter, after being behind Gilas with as many as double digits before.
But Gilas took on the challenge and defended their lead, even with a hurting Calvin Abueva who slipped and hurt his left ankle and the Qataris closing in dangerously.
Matthew Wright–who made more than 50 percent of his three-point shots—-was no question the man of the game, as he rallied the team from start to finish.
The final score: 74-80.
