MANILA, AUG. 1 – Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said the government is ready to extend assistance to would-be victims of tropical storm “Carina” with relief goods prepositioned in areas that may be affected.
In a radio interview, Andanar said that based on the report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development are already on the ground with a stockpile of food packs ready for distribution. He said some 30,000 food packs are prepositioned in Region 1, and another 1,900 in Region 8.
Andanar alerted residents in low-lying areas especially those on the eastern and northern seaboards of the country as tropical storm “Carina” intensifies.
The weather disturbance is bringing moderate to heavy rainfall that poses danger and the threats of flooding and storm surge. He urged fisher folk to delay going to sea as precaution.
Meanwhile, regarding the plan to increase the salaries of soldiers, police, and public school teachers, Andanar said the Department of Budget and Management is now looking at the possible sources of funding. During President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s recent visits to police and military camps, he repeatedly assured the uniformed services of his administration’s commitment to an increase in their salaries starting August.
