‘Habagat’ death toll now at 7; more than 32,000 families displaced

 

MANILA, Aug. 16 (PNA) — Seven persons were dead and seven others are still missing as heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon continue to pummel most parts of Luzon.

In its 8:00 p.m. update Monday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said:

As of 11:00 am, Today the "Habagat" (Southwest Monsoon) will continue to bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains over the Ilocos Region and over the provinces of Benguet, Zambales and Bataan. THE LIST INCLUDES ONE DEAD AND FIVE MISSING IN SATURDAY’S FLASHFLOOD AT THE SUMAG RIVER TUNNEL PROJECT OF THE METROPOLITAN WATERWORKS AND SEWERAGE SYSTEM IN GEN. NAKAR, QUEZON PROVINCE WHERE AT LEAST ONE WORKER WAS RESCUED.

ONE DROWNING WAS REPORTED IN BARANGAY CANAUILLIAN, JANIUAY, ILOILO; ANOTHER DROWNING WAS REPORTED IN NAGTAHAN, MANILA WHILE THREE MORE WERE KILLED BY A COLLAPSED FIREWALL AT OROQUIETA ST., STA. CRUZ, MANILA; AND ANOTHER DROWNING DEATH IN BARANGAY MARIANA, QUEZON CITY AND ONE DROWNING DEATH IN BROOKE’S POINT, PALAWAN.

FIVE OF THE SIX INJURED WERE HURT IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE COLLAPSED FIREWALL IN STA. CRUZ, MANILA AND ONE IN TAYTAY, RIZAL AFTER BEING HIT BY FAILING ROCKS.

MEANWHILE, TWO FISHERMEN, ONE FROM BARANGAY BOGNUYAN, GASAN, MARINDUQUE AND ONE FROM BRGY. CALASAGEN, BROOKE’S POINT, PALAWAN WERE REPORTED MISSING.

MEANWHILE, 32,220 FAMILIES HAVE BEEN DISPLACED BY THE MONSOON RAINS, OR EQUIVALENT TO 154,988 PERSONS.

IN ITS 8 A.M. UPDATE, THE NDRRMC SAID THE FAMILIES ARE FROM THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION, REGIONS III AND VI AND THE PROVINCES OF CAVITE, LAGUNA, BATANGAS, RIZAL AND QUEZON.
