Every year, on April 22, the whole world celebrates Earth Day. First celebrated in the 1970s, this worldwide event is held to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in. It was first held on April 22, 1970.
Now, the event is globally coordinated by the Earth Day Network and is celebrated in more than 192 countries.
In the Philippines, the event focuses on different environmental issues that we face as a nation. One of the most pressing is the impact of climate change, one extreme manifestation of which is Super Typhoon Yolanda. It has affected and continues to have a great effect on the lives, not only of those who directly suffered the brunt of its power but also those who have relatives and loved ones in the affected areas.
Admittedly, it would take not only national but international efforts and cooperation on the global scale to bring about positive changes for our environment. But we as individuals can do our part, however small it is, which can help the Earth.
As an acknowledgement to the power of individuals to make positive changes, NET 25 came up with a new TV program entitled “Klima ng Pagbabago”. In partnership with the Climate Change Commission, the program features various environmental projects and topics, which could inspire us to stand up and take part in changing the environment for the better!
Let’s celebrate the environment and do our part to make everyday a happy Earth Day!
