Heavy rains cause destruction and chaos in central Bolivia

Torrential rain and floods have left hundreds homeless in central Bolivia, the government said on Tuesday (February 17).

According to preliminary reports, some 182 families have been affected, 91 hectares of crops were damaged and 12 homes were flooded in four municipalities in the region of Cochabamba in the Andean country.

In the municipality of Sicaya in the province of Capinota, four communities were affected by overflowing rivers. At least 92 families lost their crops in an area of ​​46 hectares. Meanwhile, two communities in the same region lost 45 hectares of crops due to hail.

Mudslides were reported in two municipalities.

In 80 percent of the cases, hail was main culprit for the disaster, local media reported.

Local residents were seen removing water and mud from their homes.

At least 25 people have been killed and more than 17,000 households have been affected by the heavy seasonal rains since October, with the central and northern regions of the country hardest hit.
