‘Hidden Figures’ tops box office

‘Hidden Figures’ — the story of three African-American women working on the NASA mission to send John Glenn into space, held onto the top spot at the North American Box office over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

Starring Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, and Janelle Monae, the film brought in $20 million over the weekend.

The musical “La La Land” starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling came took the second spot, netting $14,500 million and considerable Oscar buzz. Animated feature “Sing” which focuses on a singing competition came in third, earning nearly $14 million.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” slipped to fourth place after nearly winning the box office the previous weekend.

Rounding out the top five films was “The Bye Bye Man,” a horror movie about three college students who are being stalked by a supernatural presence known as the “Bye Bye Man.” STX Films spent nearly $8 million to make the horror movie, which earned nearly $10 million in it’s opening weekend. — (REUTERS)
