(Reuters) — A hippo being transported on a truck in South Taiwan’s Miaoli County on Friday (December 26) jumped out of the vehicle, and broke its leg and tooth, being left stranded on the street for hours before being rescued, local media reported.
The hippo jumped through the window of the moving truck and hit a parked car before falling on the ground, local media said.
Footage aired on FTV, a local broadcaster, showed the injured tearful hippo lying on the street with crowds gathered around it and scratches along the parked car it hit during the jump.
After a few hours on the ground, the injured hippo was lifted into a truck and transported to a small lake where FTV said it is receiving medical treatment.
The owner of the hippo could face a fine of up to TW $75,000 (around US $2,400) for violating the laws of animal protection, local media cited Taiwanese authorities as saying.
