(Eagle News) — The attending doctor of Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon on Thursday confirmed the Customs chief had suffered a heart attack, which may reportedly have been caused by stress.
Dr. Arthur Bayani of the Manila East Medical Center made the disclosure as a House of Representatives medical team visited the Customs chief in the hospital at the behest of the House committee on ways and means.
The House committee is conducting an investigation into the P6.4-billion drug shipment that entered the country via Customs express lanes.
Faeldon is facing mounting calls to resign for his alleged incompetence that resulted in what some congressmen said was the bungling of what should have been strong cases against the two foreigners believed behind the illegal shipment.
According to Bayani, the Customs chief experienced the heart attack as he was having his dentures done.
While Faeldon was expected to be discharged soon, Bayani said his patient needed to rest “for a couple of days” before attending the hearing.
“We will be giving him medication,” Bayani told reporters.
Should Faeldon decide to take a rest, he would reportedly send Customs Deputy Commissioner Natalio Ecarma III as his representative in the House hearing.
